New car, unsure where to start.

Hey all,

So I got my 86 trans am about a month ago now and I'm still trying to figure out what was done to the car and what wasn't. Back in '05 the previous owner had a 350 crate engine swapped (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-10067353) by a local shop. Here lies my question, back in 2014 my car failed the CA emissions testing for the reason of surpassing Carbon Monoxide emissions at 25 mph. It passed the testing at 15 mph. Is there a possibility that the car is running rich due to a failure to upgrade the injectors or electronic control on the TBI? Furthermore, how can I check if these systems were upgraded at the time the engine was installed? My overall goal for this engine to to build it up to make 400-500 HP and still pass CA emissions. I'm not sure where to start so any suggestions or answers would be wonderful.

Thanks for your time, Mr.Blu

Re: New car, unsure where to start.

An '86 will/should be either a carb or TPI. The 2-bbl TBI on f-body's wasn't introduced until '88. Although it may have been swapped into it.

High CO = rich mixture.

High fuel pressure, leaking injector(s), failed pressure regulator allowing fuel past the rubber diaphragm, FAULTY O2 SENSOR or wire harness. There's a dozen other things it could be.

I'd have expected an '86 to have a one-piece-rear-main seal engine.
