Emissions Question (new engine, old car)

I have a 1990 trans am 5.0. But it got swapped about 7 years ago to a ramjet 350 5.7. I live in indiana (1 of the 2 counties in the state that has emissions) and I am determined to get her new stickers this year (so i must pass emissions). I tried to get it passed and told them it was a different engine and they blew me off and said they can only test it for what the car says it is. Any ideas on how to get around it? They are testing the dang thing for the emissions of a 5.0 when it is clearly not. Very frustrated.
The ideas i have been given are a po box in a different county, but that sounds like a bad idea in my head.
An engine additive, but i am blowing the hydro carbons and nitrogen way pasted the regular amount. If i remember right, they were around double the amount.
I was suggested a new cat, but i have a buddy that works in a shop and he said it wouldnt do that significant of a job seeing as i already have a performance cat, and its pretty new.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Emissions Question (new engine, old car)

To be fair, a newer Ramjet 350 should test as well as an old 305; if your numbers are double the nominal values, there's probably something else going on. I'd suggest doing a good tune-up. Be sure to verify your base timing. Check the spark plugs for cleanliness and verify correct gap, or just replace 'em. Look for vacuum leaks as well. If you're running headers in place of the stock exhaust manifolds, you might want to consider using a heated O2 sensor.

Hmm, I guess I agree with that. I am running headers so I will look into that. I appreciate the input. Also, nice camaro. Love the accents with the black and white.

Where in Indiana? I didn't know there were two counties that still test.

Agreed, if its tuned right, it should pass with flying colors.

The Ram jet should be e pretty efficent set up, not sure if you can get into the ecm for tuning.

Re: Emissions Question (new engine, old car)

Performance cats are 49-state cats. 50-state cats cost more but do work measurably better. HC can be too much fuel, but can also be weak ignition or not enough timing. The RJ350 comes programmed for long-tube 1.625" headers, which you probably aren't using. The RJ350 cam is clean enough, easily. Part of your problem is not having EGR. The '87-legal ZZ4 crate conversion doesn't use EGR either, but that's 87, your 90 has to have it. You could rig up an external EGR, which might be helped by starting with a 75 mm EGR spacer for a same-year Mustang 5.0. That's as close as you're likely to find. IOf you're prepared to spend, converting the RJ to TPI will let it look enough like the original 305, except you're still needing external EGR. However, in this case everything you need already exists. But the same investment should get you a used LB9 to swap in for testing, then replace the RJ after the testing.

Re: Emissions Question (new engine, old car)

they would only know its not the right engine if you told them. i know plenty of people with jacked up street cars going through porter county emmisions, and nobody says a thing

ps. 2 original tbi truck cats welded together and then welded into place usually does the trick for me and my buddies, then we drive down the street to the shop and cut them off again til next time. we also know someone that lives in laporte co. and we've used his address before to get plates

Re: Emissions Question (new engine, old car)

hot rod magazine did a 383 in a third gen with emisions testing and with a stock chip and all emisions hardawre hooked up it passed as a 305 so your r.j. should def. be able to pass if you tune it up right and keep a stockish chip in the computer the egr is def one issue if you dont have one but just tinker and test

I think that's been done twice. Once with iron production non-Vortec heads, and once with early Edelbrock heads. One of them got away with the stock chip by playing with injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

Northwest Indiana. I believe it is cause we are so close to chicago. And yeah, I thought it was an MEFI 3 setup but it indeed an MEFI 4 setup, so i was thinking maybe the O2 sensor is sitting wrong or not wired correctly.
