305 TBI dies
305 TBI dies
Hello everyone new here, I have a 90 305 tbi and it was in pretty rough shape when I got it so I’ve been going through stuff to get it running... one thing I’m absolutely stumped on is it dying. I will put the key and start it and it acts completely normal, starts up and sounds good (to my ears it doesn’t sound like it’s missing or anything like that but I could be wrong) while it’s in park I can rev it up and have no issues. When I put in in reverse, it has no issues from what I can tell as well, but when I put it in drive it will idle forward and act fine but any pressing of the throttle at all immediately makes the car die... I have heard different things from people, that it could be the vats or something else but I’m still puzzled... I was wondering what you guys thought, thank you!

Re: 305 TBI dies
Could be a number of problems. Low fuel pressure, bad injectors, throttle position sensor, wrong timing, etc etc etc, but it is not the VATS.

Connect a scan tool, look at the data stream and check for codes. Find out what the computer is trying to tell you.
Verify fuel pressure.
How long since the "tune-up" items have been replaced? Fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, cap 'n' rotor, ignition timing adjusted, air filter, etc.?

Are you saying you can give it throttle in reverse, and it's fine, but you can't give it throttle in Drive or it dies? That's REALLY weird.

yea it’s really weird it seems like as soon as I hit a certain rpm it will immediately die, sounds like it’s bogging so I would think fuel pump but like I said I could redline it in reverse/park if I wanted to... nevertheless I’ll check fuel pressure and the timing. I’m just puzzled, thank you for your help
