305 tbi excessive fuel pressure

1989 305 tbi all stock. Had a bad studder put the fuel pressure gage on and read 4psi. Pulled the tank and replaced fuel pump with Delphi FE0115 pump and screen. Per the delphi site pump is recommended and runs 19psi. While working on it I blew out the metal lines and replaced all the rubber lines. New wix fuel filter and rebuilt the throttle body with new IAC and TPS

Everything back together and now it's running nearly 60psi on the gage, will not take any throttle and smokes like a diesel. I verified my gage by throwing it on my pick up. I pulled the regulator and checked that. TPS is set accurate at idle and WOT. Finally pulled the tank again just to verify part numbers and it is the correct pump. I'm lost at this point. Car ran beautiful until it began losing fuel pressure. My mother bought the car brand new and I know it was the original fuel pump so it didn't surprise me that it was going. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you wound up with the wrong pump, even if the part numbers are what they are supposed to be. A 3x output from a pump like that would be pretty unlikely.

*edit*

Checked specs and relief pressure (maximum it should be able to supply) is 29psi. You've got an incorrect pump.

Your stock return system should be able to safely return the excess fuel. Where did you plumb the gage? Is the rest of the system stock? Did you mess with the diaphragm in the regulator? I would open that up and make sure it is not torn, ripped, or unseated.

Re: 305 tbi excessive fuel pressure

Check the hoses at the tank, it is easy to swap the return and CCP vent lines. That will cause high fuel pressure.

RBob.

Re: 305 tbi excessive fuel pressure

Gotta be a blockage of some sort starting at the regulator, or somewhere back to the tank.

Doesn't matter what fuel pressure the pump can generate. The pressure regulator and return system can drop it to what it's supposed to be...IF (big IF) the regulator and return system is functioning properly.

Either the regulator is stuck, or the return is plugged.

Fixed!! Thanks to Rbob for suggesting the lines crossed. I marked the lines and in my stubbornness felt there was no way I could have mixed them up. Go figure that was the problem. Had the vent and return swapped. Swapped back and runs perfect ar 11psi. Thanks for the help everyone!
