what are some great mods w/out touching the engine?

My 115k 305 tbi is sadly in the last days of its life. Even though it sounds good all it takes is one time and bam, its gone. So since i will at least be rebuilding and probably putting a 350tpi in there, i want to know your suggestions for some modification without having to deal specifically with the 305, i dont want to spend to much money on a modiifcation ill only have til i get my 350 in.

I know these "what mods to do" questions have been asked before but not with these limitations.

i was thinking about flowmaster(i already got em, just yesterday!!), a shift kit, megashifter, subframe connectors and other chassis mods to make the car stiff and handle good, maybe some lowering springs...thats all i can think of right now, thanx for the help.

btw its a daily driver, unfortunately.

i was thinking of headers but will the headers also fit the 350? i thought that headers for a 305 were just for the 305? The edelbrock headers im looking at right now say for 305 tbi's which i think means they wont fit a 350 tpi, which is what im getting for the summer. iF they could fit on a 350 also that would be great, *** knows i need some headers.

headers will interchange between a 305 and a 350. if you are planning a motor swap soon anyway just buy headers that have a 1 3/4 primary tube instead of teh 1 5/8 primary tubes normally used with a 305.

I would definately go with the suspension upgrades first....SFC and LCA's would be a good start.

They are right about the headers though....if you're puttin' a 350 in it, you're probably going to need the 1 3/4 primaries, however; if you put headers on your 305 with that size primary, it's going to be sucking pretty bad.

As far as the transmission is concerned, I would hold out on any shiftkits, because once you do change those gears out to say a 3.27 or something like that, it's going to be shifting harder anyways, so you might not need a shiftkit.

To sum it all up,

1.) Get your suspension up to par (SFC, LCA's, Panhard Bars, etc)
2.) Upgrade your brakes so as to rein in all that new power (slotted rotors, better pads and brake lines; maybe even a rear disc brake job if your not going to get a whole new rear end)

1.75 headers work quite well on a 305.

I was definately planning on doing the suspension mods. Its always good to build upon a solid foundation. IM prolly try to get headers within the next couple of days. Ill probably go with edelbrock but if yall can persuade me to another brand ill check it out. An ill probably go with the 1.75's but what do you mean by "sucking pretty bad" with the headers on a 305?

an btw how hard is the installation for headers, is it harder to put 1.75 headers on a 305 then a 350.
thanx a lot.

its no harder no matter what the engine size. SBC is a SBC. he said that 1 3/4" primaries would hurt a 305 due to their size, but i dont think it will that much. shorties should go in pretty easily, set aside a couple days tops from what i have read. SLP is the only manufacturer that makes 1 3/4" shorty headers for a thirdgen fbody, although i think MAC might make some. edelbrock headers arent 1 3/4" primaries all are 1 5/8" primaries. the only major difference is in the size of the y-pipes. if you are going to go with 350 you might want to consider the SLPs but they are not the cheapest headers out there, they are stainless steel though.

Looks like ill have to have a lil patience, spend a lil more money for the better slp headers(are they really that much better in terms of hp and low end) and run them on my 305 til i manage to get the 350 tpi in. its definately going to be a pain going from tbi to tpi and then from 305 to 350. sometimes you look in the mirror an go, "what am i doing, am i crazy!!"haha. this is going to be a fun project.

an btw when you say hurt the 305 do you mean in terms of performance or just overall engine quality and durability.

hot damn those slp's are expensive. really makes me wonder if thier worth it. with the money id save with the edelbrocks i could probably buy some more horsepower doing something else. i hate making decisions. thanx for the help.
