FYI A/C system removal

Since I have never used it since I bought the car in '93 I removed the A/C sytem this weekend for a grand weight savings of 30#.

Items removed were:

Compressor : 10# (much less than what I thought it would weigh)

Evaporator, Accumulator, Condensor, Hoses, Blower motor, and Heater box. : 20# total

WOW I can actually change the spark plugs on the passenger side without chewing my hands up!!

Since I never drive the car in the winter/fall the heater core is next.

I bought a 24 x 24 x .065 sheet of aluminum to patch the holes in the firewall. I now have a great place to relocate the MSD box. Right now it is on the passenger strut tower since there was no room any place else.

Don't you have to get your A/C decharged or something like that before you remove it? because I'm thinking about taking mine out too even though I'm from Texas so its a pretty crazy idea

Yeah, if youi never converted to the new system then you still have R-12 (just check the compressor lable). Many shops will PAY you for the R-12 they remove (or at least do it for free) because it's getting so expensive now compared to the R-32 and R-33 systems. I was told by a a friend of mine that owns a shop that he'd give me $20 for the R-12 in my system.
