Trunk Pop

When I first got my car I popped the electronic hatch. Well my dad being the smart guy he is slammed it closed. I think it stripped the gears or something cause when I tried to close it the trunk latched but it makes a noise and doesn't go all the way down. The only way I could get it to stop was to take the panel off and unhook the power to it. Does anyone know exactley what it is and the cheapest way to fix it????

there are a number of places and people who sell the replacement parts for the "hatch pull down" assembly but I think theyre rather expensive ($400.00 or so), I just left mine disconnected and adjusted the assemboy so the hatch closes all the way without the motor.

I got mine to close most of the way I think. It is not perfectley even and it rattles alot. Should I just try to get it down lower, because it took me almost an hour to get it that good.

Down in the housing there will be switch that lowers and raises the motor. Sometimes when the hatch is slammed it will mess up the motor so that it gets stuck in the down position unable to properly close the hatch. Hit this switch and you'll hear and see the motor raise, this would be the easiest and most likely problem.
If not, it was your Dad's fault, tell him to pay for it.

Just tell him, that later in life that social security check won't help too much and he's going to need you, unless he has some good retirement fund or something.

I have a 91 z28 and when i bought it i had to fix the hatch as well. My mechs wife had a thirdgen as well and knew right away how to fix it. apprently, there are some gears inside the housing for that hatch part (lack or actual name for part). he told me if it gets stuck again, then to take off the back covering (the big part of the trunk that convers the part. He said if it is slammed to hard or forced down the gears can become mis-alligned or even come off a little. And if the gears strip, he told me to come back and he will order me the peices, as they are not to expensize. It will only get expensive if you have to replace the whole unit, motor and all.

If I do need to buy new gears where would I get them and about how much are they? When I have it turned on and try to close the trunk it starts to go down and then it skips like it won't go all the way down and keeps doing that...

I found somewhere that the part number is 20160587. Does anyone know where I can get the gears at. I have the number just no place to buy it.

What Kind or car is it? Go to a junk yard and get one for a little searching. They will sell you the whole assembly for 20-30 bucks. The problem is all that krap is made of plastic. There is this little switch that shuts the motor off when it lowers to a certain position. The tab that flips this switch is metal, kinda sharp to be rubbing against plactic. When I fixed mine I coated that metal tab with some glue so it doesn't wear out. The sad thing is when it was fixed I was all drunk and I went out to my car to get some cds or somthing And locked my keys in the car. So I had to break my hatch reach a long stick to the hatch release button and open the hatch to get my keys. What a krock....

Sometimes just "wiggling" the motor assembly will fix the problem.
