can i run the fuel pump with out a relay??
as most of u that have helped me out here know i have done a motor swap and did the dumb thing as some have done and took the wiring harness out before i knew what i needed what i dont.. i have figured out how to wire it but wana know if i can run it with out the relay or not.. i plan on having it ona switch.. i wana really thank you guys for all your help and for putting up with my questions even though most of u are probably rolling your eyes i appreciate u guys a lot
thanks

I would go ahead and get a relay since they are pretty cheap at Autozone or Advance Auto. Where do you plan on running the pos. from? The battery or the fuse box? The reason I ask is because if you run it from the fuse box the thing won't still be on when you turn off your car. If you run a wire straight from the battery to a switch and then to the pump it will stay on. I would just use a relay because if you accidently leave the pump on it will run the battery down and also the pump will get really hot if you don't have it flowing.
I would use a relay just so that you don't have the current of the pump flowing through the car's cabin. And that way you can use the +12V of the relay straight to the battery, and use a low-current wire inside the car's ignition wiring to feed the relay.) That way fuel pump is only on with the key, and you have a nice clean 12V feed w/ little resistance from going through old wiring and old fuse boxes (just put your own fuse on it of course.)
Also, by using a relay, you don't even have to use a switch and you can wire it up to turn on whenever the key is on. Or if you do want a switch, you can use the pretty little lighted ones without having to worry about melting it with all the current.

can some one tell me how to wire it up now? can i use the relay that came with the car or do i have to get a specific relay?? is the fuel pump relay the one on the drivers side fire wall?? on the right side looking from the front of the car?? can u tell me exactly how to wire it up?? now with the relay i wont have the oil sending unit is that all right?? and when i wire the pump with the relay will the pump stay on all the time?? sorry for all the questions and i probably seem like i am in a hurry its just i am getting real close to getting this thing to start and i am getting excited!!.. so if some one can give me some good intructions to wire it up i would be greatful thanks

all I did was bypass the relay between the back seats and ran a wire to my ignition (fuse box). I also used an afpr. it is real easy.
The pump runs all the time , but with the afpr return line it helps to keep the fuel cool. Just be sure the tank vent is clear.

is there a relay between the rear seats?? all i saw was a plug in with 3 wires grey and black pink and a tan with white stripe.. where exactly do these wires run to then i could tap into the grey wire and run that to a positive 12v.. since i am pretty sure that is the positve wire.. i think for now not wanting u guys to get mad at me bout the relay i am just going to wire the grey wire in for now i think..
I would wire the relay to be activated from the crank position on the ignition switch and from an oil pressure switch.
The fuel pump will only run if the engine is cranking or running. That way if you get in an accident that stalls the engine the pump won't continue to run.
This is especially nice if the accident is bad enough to rupture the fuel line.

ok guys i have been trying to follow this and i am getting kinda confused. i am puttin a carbed 350 in place of my 305 tbi. i plan on useing the mallory 3-post fuel regulator. i would like to rip out all my wireing but if i am gonna run into all these probs with the fuel pump i don't wunt to. so wut wires can i cut an wut ones do i need to keep for the fuel pump to work. also i don't wunt to just tuck away all the wires. i wunt to get rid of the wires under the hood, thats all i am worried about. i don't see how any of them can effect the fuel pump so can i just cut all the wires under my hood back by the fire wall and then just leave my comp in the car and be fine? thanks so much guys
its under the tech general its says something bout a pic with the relay under my name it helps but still have a few questions on it myself so maybe we can figure something out i do now know that i have to have a relay
that i dont need the oil sending unit
and i am starting to get where some of the wires go but not all of them

I think you are making this a little more difficult than it is....Hey you could always remove the stock pump from the tank, and go with a mechanical or upgrade to a high volume electric....I think if you wire it as Vader has instructed, You wont have any problems,
I'm not sure but I think even with the relay wired in, the pump will run all the time when the ignition is on. before the computer would shut off the pump when max fuel pressure was reached...now with the open loop...(afpr..return line) the fuel cycles to the regulator back to the tank..malory claims this helps to keep the fuel cool.....As for fires, Arent most modern cars equiped with an emergency kill feature? isnt this controled by the computer? No computer, No safety feature, My thinking anyway....hmmmmm interesting topic. I guess that is why all manufacturers warrenties are null and void once you start making mods..maybe someone could call John Force and ask him how he wires his fuel pump....few years back he was allways on fire.
Hope you get it figured out 2 ponchos, I know how it feels to be so close....
