I noticed a puddle of gas underneath my car this morning. When i lifted the hood, I could actually see the gas dripping straight from the fuel pump. (Its located on the front left side of the engine, looking at front of car) Does that mean the fuel pump is gone? The fuel pump looks to be pretty old - probably from the original 305 that used to be in there, but i'm not sure. I want to get a new good fuel pump that will be able to support up to 500hp, as new heads and camshaft are in the near future. The motor is somewhere in the 300 hp range right now. Which one would you guys recomend? I have a holley 750 if that matters and will be getting the avenger 770 pretty soon.
p.s. the car run just fine yesterday, what could cause a leak like this when the car is not even running? Is the fuel system under pressure constantly?

 

If it was me I would run a inline pump, Like maybe one from Holly. But if you want to go with a Manual Pump then I perfer Edelbrock. And the answer to your question is Yes the fuel pump is bad, but befor I change it I would make sure its not leaking out of a line.

Edelbrock pump. But holley offers one you can use with stock hose. Inline would be much better but expect to pay.

 

Thanks guys, i just ordered an Edelbrock Performer fuel pump part #350-1721. The guy at summit said it should support up to 550 hp, so i think i'm good. And if that wont be enough i can always install an electric one right next to my gas tank just to help push the fuel out of the tank. The edelbrock pump comes with 3/8" NPT inlet/outlet, are the stock ones 1/4" ? If so i will need to order some adapters also. Can i check the size without removing the old fuel pump?

 

I just measure the diameter of my lines and they were 3/8" so i don't think i will be needing anything else. So why is the inline electric pump so much better then the mechanical?
