ummm, hmmn that shouldnt be down there

Well Ive been in the process of pulling the heads of my 350, and got the intake and the carb off(used to be TPI) and the rags that I usually stick in the engine got REALLY dirty before i started stuffing them in there to STOP things from falling in, and before i knew it ALOT of debris fell down into the(I suppose the squares lead to the cylinder by way of the valves?). Well what should I do? Do I now need to pull the engine? or is there something else I can do or will it be fine and just clean it out once the heads are off. Thanks again, ill be checking back

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it if that is all that happened. Just clean up the heads and check the cylinders for any debris while the heads are off.

But be sure to flush the lifter valley with some oil and drain it before you start it to get rid of any debris that fell down there. If you didn't clean off the intake before you pulled it and a lot of dirt and debris went down into the engine, you have to do whatever you can to get that crap out of there - especially if it is sand. Done blew up a motor once doing that crap when I was a wee inexperienced wrench .

so where are the key areas I should look for debris? Just what you mentioned or are there other lil areas I should watch out for, and as far as flushing the lifter valley(thats the area right under the intake?) how would i go about doing that?
Whats the best way to clean the cylinders(engine still in car)

For the stuff that fell into the ports you might try a shop-vac or vacuum cleaner before doing anything serious and then check the port with like a small mirror like a dental mirror and a flashlight to see if the junk is out. Good luck.
