it would be intriseting to have the poncho 400 or the olds 403 in a thirdgen, but it would need just alittle work to get it to fit also the tranny will fit in an 82 that had a TH200c and you might be able to salvage the wheels

400 pontiac in a 3rd gen will be a tight fit but you can make it work. You will need figure out how to mount a pontiac engine to a 3rd gen, could be fun since a 3rd gen never had a pontiac engine. Also the tranny will need an adapter plate or be replaced. Pontiac has a different bolt pattern.

I believe that a Pontiac engine will mount in a 3rd Gen no problem as long as there's room for it. It's the trrans/engine interface that might give you trouble. Unless you go with either a non OD automatic or a manual. The exhaust manifolding might be a problem too.
whats a good transmision to use that will bolt right up? I'm not attached to the 700r4 at all, especialy because my mechanic said it would be more expensive to rebuild because it has more parts. I don't want to convert to a manual. Overdrive would be nice, but i could live with out it. Thanks

Do some homework first.I'd first check to see if the 2nd Gen Pontiac motor mount is the same as the mount for a 3rd Gen F-body. Or at least check to see if the 3rd Gen motor mount will bolt to the Pontiac engine. I've seen a few SBC's swapped into 1st Gen Firebirds. Since the SBC is the common thread across all Generation F-bodies, and the Pontiac was seen in both 1st and 2nd Gen F-bodies, it's a good bet the Pontiac will fit in a 3rd Gen.
Most any B-O-P (Buick-Olds-Pontiac) patterned TH-350 transmissions will fit. Tail shaft length might limit your choices and whether or not the 3rd Gen will allow for moving the cross member forward or backwards. I think B&M makes a kit for fitting TH-350's in place of TH700's.
I'm starting to miss my 389 Tri-Power......

Remember, the PONTIAC engine is a LOT heavier than a sbc. I was going to use my built pontiac 406 in my GTA, untill I lowered it into the chassis. Custom headers is about the only choise for exhaust. I think the mounts is no problem, you just have to remove the stock mounts and drill new holes in the frame. There were some 200s that fit the bop bell housings. The seat track won't fit the 3rd gen, but you may be able to bolt the 3rd gen tracks to the 2nd gen seats.
