Please educate me about fuel pumps
All these questions refer to an 89 IROC L98 and a 92 Firebird (V6). What type of in-tank fuel pumps and in-line fuel pumps can our cars use? If your in-tank fuel pump does not work, can you put in an inline pump and not worry about the in-tank? What brands of pumps are recommended? What flow-rate of a pump do you need for a 400HP N/A and 550HP N2O engine? What about flow rate for a stock V6?
I've heard putting an in-tank pump is a PITA, what all is involved? Why go through the trouble of the in-tank, is it better?
What r the pros and cons of an inline vs. and in-tank?
A lot of questions, but I know zero about this, never had to do it before.

Riley is correct. In tank pumps are used because the pump can be realistically sized. The pump will have to be larger to siphon from the tank if it is outside. For example many pickup trucks use as many as THREE pumps. A Ford f-150 with a V-8 uses two in tank pumps(if it has dual tanks) and one inline pump. Also a benefit of the in tank is that the fuel will cool the pump and extend it's life. If you are going to replace it I strongly recommend using the AC-Delco OE, have heard way too many horror stories about aftermarket junk. If you want to play around with fuel delivery get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
