Who has an 87 ? Need an easy question answered.

Got an 87?

Can someone please tell me where the wiring goes from the alternator?

<img src="http://www.spots.ab.ca/~jmd/pics/alt_plug.jpg">

I know the lug on the back connects to the battery; that's fine. I know the fat wire from this plug goes to red in the old wiring (1986) But all alternators I've deal with have only one more wire. Can I take only one of these to the old black wire? Or both? Or what?

I think I should go buy an 87 f-body to answer my question.

The big one (on the left) is the power to the battery.
The smaller white one goes to a swiched ignition source (12v signal)
and the black one is a ground.

I thought the metal "lug" sticking out of the alternator went to the battery.

I know the 86 wiring left at that point (black wire & a thicker red wire) are used, but which ones coming out of the 87 alt. are used?

So if I have the big wire in the plug hooked to the big wire in the old harness, and the lug on the back going to the battery... there are 2 small wires left. Can I somehow use a volts meter and figure out which one does what?

It's not that I wouldn't drive 100 miles right now to look at a car or a Helms, it's that I don't know of one locally for me to go look at, or I would go do so and leave you busy guys alone.

Hehe...ok ill answer this one....even though I have already talked to you....the plug is labeled S then F then L ...with S being voltage sensing input (your big red cable on your 86 connector) F is the the next one and it is the one you are looking to connect to the other wire on your connector from your 86....the last one isnt used it is maked L and is used for an idiot light as best as i can tell...it is maked as the turn on input....there you go....enjoy...and dont be so grumpy....HEHE
