How hard is it to remove the "drive" speedometer gear from the trans??

The other day I took out my "driven" speedometer gear to see what I had. Now I know I need a different "drive" gear to make mine right. It's a 700R4 transmission with a cable-driven speedometer. I'm getting the new gear today so I was wondering what I have to do to remove/install the drive gear before I go out and do it. Thanks in advance.

It's pretty involved for so simple a part. You have to remove the driveshaft, disconnect the torque arm from it's mount, disconnect the cat converter hanger and friends from the tailshaft, remove the driven gear, remove the tailshaft, take a tranny fluid bath, wrestle with that little clip, then attempt to remove the drivegear without resorting to flat out smashing it off the output shaft.

Well, I got it all apart, and I started putting on the new drive gear. Sure enough, right as I had it almost all the way on, I hit it too hard and cracked the gear right in half. So now I have to wait until Tuesday or so til I can get another gear. I'm just going to use my broken gear as a piece to hit with the hammer instead of hitting the gear directly.

Yup. Murphy strikes again. Lubricate it with a generous coating of petroleum jelly (inside the gear and outside the output shaft) before you install it. That'll help some.

Transmission: 700R-4
First Boil some hot water
Turn off heat
Thow gear in the hot water
Wait a few minutes for thermal expansion to occure
Quickly put retainer clip into Groove in the gear
slide Gear on tailshaft (while it's still hot) to clip-hole closest to valvebody Sorry , burning your hands may occure, use a rag to handle the hot gear

If you clip it on the wrong hole, Don't try to force it out when it's cool! It'll break!

Use a hot water rag to expand the gear again and start over.
Be careful not to leave water drops in the trans , wipe the tailshaft and coat with some trans fluid.

Good Luck,
Eddie
