Griffin Rad parts came today- No wonder I was Overheating!!!

All the stuff for the install all cost about 1/2 of the price of a BeCool rad.

Here are some pics-

I got the highest capacity cooler they had. It is self regulating, because as the hotter ATF gets thinner it flows more. Cool piece!

The stock radiator support cover was the only tricky part, since the radiator is thicker, my stock cover fit over it, but not all the way down. This new is perfect.
Oh, and the one I got doesn't have a drain plug.

Doh! So did I... didn't even cross my mind!

As for the install... it doesnt look hard at my end, but I havent done any work yet. The cooler should be easy to install because it seems that I just have to cut, reflange the lines and stick on the supplied adapter, hard to soft line, and make a bracket to mount it on. The cooler comes with all the fixins for every application; I am just making a new bracket because I want the most air flow, and a good appearance.

Drain plug? Who needs a drain plug to drip all over the floor and the frame and clog up with little particles of sediment so it takes hours to drain all the way? I take the radiator cap off, put the car on ramps, and slide under the front with a drain pan on my stomach, and a screwdriver in my hand. I undo the lower hose, and as I'm disconnecting it, I push the pan up to the radiator lower outlet. The whole rad drains in, oh, 30 seconds, no mess? Just do it on a cool motor so you don' t burn yourself!

Was you able to use the stock radiator cap or does it require a special cap for the griffin radiator?

same one i got, just measure your old one wayne, width and height, yes no drain plug, no biggy take off the lower hose, i had to get a new 15lb cap from griffin......i ditched the stock shroud,i just cut it off of the fan then fabricated L brackets for the top and used tie wraps thru holes in the rad support on the bottom and just drilled holes in the plastic surrounding the fan, i tried screws but they just mad the plastic flex and then the fan rubbed........while your at it throw some metal hoses on it , they dissipate heat alot better than the rubber crap.........i got a 48" or 40" cant remember now from summit for $100........it comes with enuff reducers and hose ends to make both upper and lower hoses................the ends are rubber i think they look ok, you could get chrome covers for the ends but for another 60 bucks i figured it would be money wasted

I'm a little confused as to how this radiator fits. It sounds like the radiator support cover doesnt fit correctly, so I guess my question is do you have to modify it to make it fit correctly, or do you have to ditch it and make your own brackets? Also, where is the tranny cooler mounted? Will the stock fan mount to the new radiator? I REALLY need a new radiator, my stock one is starting to leak a little, and my car overheats a bit in traffic when I have the AC on. I'm going to be dropping in a new eninge thats gonna need MUCHO cooling power, too, so I had better get on the ball so I dont end up stranded. It would be AWSOME if someone could make a tech article on installilng an aftermarket radiator and tranny cooler, hint hint....

You could call Summit Racing 800-230-3030 and get a part #. Griffin probably has a website somewhere, too.

Wayne, you would just buy radiator hoses to fit that different inlet/outlet appliation. 'Fact, you could do like Mark did, and use a universal hose covered with the braided sleeving. I put the braided sleeve over my factory hose; looked nice, but man, it's beat up by now. Summit sells lengths of radiator hose with the sleeving already on 'em... you'd just need to buy the dress-up hex-covered clamps.

And I bet your lower hose (driver side) curves downward, then up, right? That's the little sucker that prevents us from having a Wonderbar!! Stupid downwards loop. Our lower outlet is angled down, and on cars like MarkSheild and GreenPro's, the lower outlet goes straight back. That prevents any interference with a Wonderbar. (See http://www.sethirdgen.org 's tech area for info on a wonderbar install.)

Green, did you get a radiator with the trans cooler built in, or are you just going to run the B&M unit on it's own? (I have the B&M one, but not quite as big! I used it in-line with the stock cooler.)

get a seperate cooler with a fan...i mounted mine in front of the rad..........just had to remove the hood safety latch and install hood pins since the latch goes thru the ..........just pop the hood and look youll see what i mean........i really dont think there is a need for a tech article on replacing a radiator......its pretty straight forward if you use that thing on your shoulders and take some measurements ahead of time its a no brainer really

Bad Boy?

My bill from Summit (minus stupid border fees) was $250. Keep in mind that I havent replaced my rad hoses; I am going to mock it up first to see what sort of lengthes/angles involved...

Ya, sucks to be me. Pressure checker Swiggly Signature wasnt as careful as he should have been when he tested the thing. Oh well, I'll get to spend more time with it out of the car...

Those Summit catch cans, I was wondering, can they be made into a regular overflow tank like ours? What if our radiator overflow connects to the bottom petcock of the catch can, the top "input" of the catch can is left open, and we open the petcock?

I have a silly little plastic overflow tank, $10 from Whitney; I mounted my MSD where my regular overflow is supposed to be. But man, that plastic tank looks cheap... in fact, it cracked on me, and I have a small leak.

Installation installation- (lol)

The rad has no trouble clearing the hood, but as everyone knows, the factor radiator fan upper support is useless. There are 1 places where the radiator core support interferes with the side tanks of the radiator; without those points the rad would sit perfectly straight

-

Good to hear Wayne! It is a good deal and an amazing radiator... not that that six makes that much heat, but that is a whole other conversation...

heh , you would be surprised if you rode (spelling ? lol) in it man . It's mildy modded as you can see in my sig .I have read articles in Car Craft and even seen old 305s run 17.30 or 17.45 .Im NOT saying yours would run that . but these were old ragged out ones that needed tune=ups and some work done ..Not to long ago I had my car in the shop and the mechanic that worked on it raced Irocs in the 80s and he told me he was very impressed with my car . BUT I know its no V8 power ! I was like Really ? lol I want a V8 or IROC bad , but I want to keep my V6 to cus I love it !

The griffin radiators say they are for racing applications only.

Why is that?

Could I use one in my daily driver?

Mark,

Would you buy one again if you had to do it over again?

Were there substantial cooling benefits?

What size is it, the 31 x 19?

Yeah, I would buy it again, I couldn't really tell you the difference cause at the time I was overheating with the stock radiator but it was due to another cause. Right now cruising my temp gauge is at the temp rating of my stat, and maybe goes 10* higher while in traffic.

He, he, he...

With all the street racing going on these days, I dont know if he will be too amused...

It is nice to know that the rad would handle the extra fire power used if you want to hot lap it at the stip or track; definate plans for my car.
