Knock Knock.... who's there?

My 89 Formula 350 has some issues. First off I have idle issues and the car seems to lack serious power. And as of late the motor has been VIBRATING pretty rough. I've heard this to engine knock which is not good I know. I'm by no means a mechanic, but would like to understand the problem before I take it in for repair so I don't get raped with un-needed charges and repairs. Maybe even purchase top quality parts for the repair instead of just stock ones. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

85,

Is the knock constant? Does it become more apparent under load or just idling? Does it vary in frequency with engine speed or road speed? Is it more predominant when the engine is cold or hot? Can you determine if it is eminating from one side or the other? Top or lower end? How is the engine oil pressure? Temperature?

The more description you can provide, the better the guesses are going to be.

It pretty much starts right when you turn the key. I have to slightly press the gas just to keep her idling for a bit then she's fine but the engine shakes like a mother the faster the car is driven. It also sounds like a model T when you accelerate somewhat.... but once I'm up to highway speeds things level off and you'd never know the problems were there really. I'm thinking I may have a clogged IAC valve maybe? As that would be my idle problem. I'm gonna have to jump under the hood this weekend to check that out, but I don't think that it would affect the serious loss of power and violent engine shakes.... or could it? I appreciate the help by the way.
