what does his mean?

For anybody that understands this stuff....

Diode 2 (D2) what is it allowing power into the Max233 IC???
also, what kind of diode is D1????

Transmission: 700R4
D1 is a Zener Diode, requires a breakover voltage to pass. Assume it's the 5.1v listed on the diagram.

I don't really understand your question regarding D2?

well, #3 on the max233 IC is an OUT.. but yet the diode (D2) allows voltage to go IN??

Ya, I see that now. I'm not familar with the max233 chip, could be they have D2 listed incorrectly? Not sure...look up the number on the D2 diode, see what type it is. May yield a clue as to how the circuit works.
