Where do I look on engine block for code?

Where do I look on engine block for code?

I know I have a 305, but I just wanted to make sure hehe. Wishful thinking, but where can I find the # on the block (besides beneath all the gunk and crap)

Transmission: 700r4 (for now)
on the drivers side, back of the motor, by the flywheel. Kinda hard to do with the motor in the car. If the motor is stock you can run the vin #
