Found The Ticking Sound!!!

found it with the old hose method many of you have suggested. it sounded like it was coming from in the motor....around the back ..but.. i couldnt hear anything through the hose ... so i put the hose near the timing chain...TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK..... put it on the oil pan..no sound... near the balancer .. no sound.. right on the timing chain cover ...TICK TICK TICK..

does this mean i have a stretched timing chain....and its slapping around in there.... problebly.....................

thanx guys

ticking at the timing cover.....
I see your motor is a 78 vintage 305, I had a 79 305 do this very thing.
What I found was one of the nylon teeth on the cam gear had broken off and jammed in the chain, the "tick" is the chain getting "bounced" off the gear teeth as the section of chain that is closed passes over. Giving some time it will chew its way thru the side of the timing cover and start leaking, along with dumping shavings into the pan for each tick. Replace the gears and chain, change the oil and replace the cover if nessesary. cheers, Bob
