400 Pontiac motor cheap!!!!

Ok everyone i need some help here. I have an 84 Trans Am and a wrecked 88 GTA with a 305TPI. There is a wrecked 77-78 TA sitting across the road from me in a storage lot for a mechanics shop. The car is totaly destroyed. Much to my amazement the owner of the shop saw me working on my car and asked me if i wanted a 400 for my TA. The car has a 400 and turbo 400 tranny in it. The story this guys is feeding me goes like this. It was a friends car and he just had the motor and tranny rebuilt. It was sitting somewhere and someone stole the intake and carb off of it. He says he'll sell me the motor and tranny for $200. The motor is in the car but is covered with a blue tarp. There is some surface rust on the back of the heads but the front of the motor does look fresh from a shop with no oil no rust nothing. The tranny fluid was clean and didn't smell burnt just pulling dipstick and checking. The valves are all closed so i assume the bores should be ok. I am not sure what to do here. I might also be able to get the rear disc to disc and a nice cowl induction fiberglass hood thrown in. I don't have much money to work with and i am trying to get my TA back up and running. I would love to drop the 400 in my car but think it would probably be to expensive and difficult in the long run. I have been thinking about just buying it and parting it out or something along with the GTA and using that money for a longblock for my car. How can i tell if the motor and tranny are worth it. Anyone have any advice? Thanks Sorry for the long post.

you could always swap everything from your current engine onto the 400 for the mean time
