I read on chevythunder.com that engines that originally came with small cap distributors can't use large cap distributors and vice versa and that'll it'll destroy your engine if you do.

I've got a '91 Vette L98 and according to chevythunder, it originally had the large cap distributor, which is what I'm using now. I'm swapping over to an LT1 intake soon and need to get a small cap distributor. I've also heard that the differences between small and large cap dists. are negligble. Should I worry about it? Can I swap the distributor gear from my current distributor to the new one I get?

 

They say swap gears because the cars that got the small cap distributor also got the roller cam (1987+). The roller cam motors would destroy a standard bronze gear in no time.
Since you are going backwards (putting a small in place of the big) like I did there is no problem and you do not have to swap gears.

 

John, I am Brian, (Brian71583@generation-3.com, just ordered your intake) On my car I have the old style large cap, I have the new style also from my friend who did an engine swap. so your saying that when I get the engine rebuilt, and put on your intake, I wont have to change anything on the new dist. I can just put it rite on?

 

Yes, the new style distributor (remote coil) will just drop right in.
