series2 - series3 (axle diff.?)

Im posting this topic in here since i didnt get any feedback in the "transmission and drivetrain" forum.

I am swapping out my carrier and putting in a series 3 with a 3.42 gear. Im guessing that if this carrier was taken out of a camaro/firebird made before 89 then im fine since i have an 87. And if the carrier was taken out of an 89 or up, then im SOL right? Unless I get a 28 splinned axle?

I hear the mid-88's could've gotten the 28 spline carrier...
