how do you verify exacly where Top dead center is if you think the timing ring slipped on the damper???

To know EXACTLY you should use a dial indicator.


To know roughly (within a few degrees) you need your #1 spark plug out, and you need to rotate the engine untill you're on the compression stroke for the #1 piston, then line up the timing mark at 0° on the compression stroke.

Take out the #1 plug, and stick a small diameter, somewhat compressible object such as a pencil or the like into the hole; rotate the engine while holding the pencil against the top of the piston as it nears TDC until the pencil reaches maximum delflection; observe the timing mark.

A dial indicator like roc says is of course the most accurate; but the other way should tell whether it's at least grossly off.
