Interesting Stroker alternative - Popular Hot Rod contest...

Rules: Small block motor (any brand) under 366 CID (plus other rules, of course). Winning criteria: area under the curve.

One guy's approach: Stroke a 307 to 365. 3.935" bore, 3.75" stroke.

He thinks it'll produce more torque down low but as much peak as shorter stroke engines, and therefore produce more area under the curve.

More fuel for the "something different" fire...

Not a bad idea taking a 283/307 and producing a motor like that. Wonder why it hasnt been done before?

Not with a 283 block. The main journals are smaller, and by the time you turn down a 400 crank, you don't have any strength left. Offsets the oil holes, too. You could use a custom small journal 3.75" stroke, small journal crank, though ($$$$'s - ouch!).

The 307 used the larger journal mains, like 350s and '68-up 327's.

Good point, forgot that it would be tough to squeeze the 400 crank in the small journal block.

there is a trick to putting a 400 crank in a 283 block......you line bore the block to a medium journal size (350,305,327,ect) AND turn down the 400 crank.....how do i know this? my buddy built one a couple years ago for his massively lifted 67 chevy shortbed. (18" of lift on 44" tires)
