Engine weight reference

I stumbled across an article about engine weights. All engines were weighed complete from carb to pan, HEI distributor, harmonic balancer and an iron water pump.

Factory SBC, iron heads etc = 520 pounds
SBC with aluminum heads = 480 pounds

Factory BBC, iron heads etc = 754 pounds
BBC with aluminum heads = 660 pounds
All aluminum ZL-1 501 pounds

They never did weights with aluminum intake manifolds. An aluminum BBC intake is a greater weight reduction than an aluminum SBC intake. Going to a mini starter will be equal on both engines. Swapping cast iron exhaust manifolds to headers cuts more weight since BBC exhaust manifolds are much heavier than SBC manifolds.

You said the magic word to set me off on a tnagent tonight.... Mini-starter... They're junk...

I first tried a http://www.tommmyjohnsonjr.com/bs starter. Its a large flywheel offset pattern... anyway 3 starts and the SOB sticks on and gets wiped in less time than..{ed}

OK then I get a GM style starter that cranks it over 3 times. I sent it back to get a replacement but never put it on, just got a stocker which I must of started 8000x so far.

Is it just me?
