2 quick Q's about oil pan removal/replacement

Ok well I have the great priveledge of installing a new oil pan tomorrow and I have two quick questions. First of all when I raise the motor up with the jack do I have to disconnect the bolts that go into the tranny and remove the torque converter/flywheel? I ask this because it looks like I only have about 2 inches between the top of my trans and the floor of the car and I think I need more than that to get the pan out.
Second question is if it's ok to jack the motor up by the balancer when I need a little more clearance or if it will bend the crank snout?
