Starter, flywheel problems...
Starter, flywheel problems...
I'm sure everybody has heard the horrible grinding noise of the starter and flywheel hitting wrong.
Well I got one those problems... It does it every 10 or so cranks, but when it does it's embarrasing as hell. It's not hanging up, it's just grinding every now and then.
I still got all my flywheel teeth and bendix teeth for now...
Will shimming the starter fix this?
What's the clearnce between the teeth of the flywheel and the teeth of the bendix suppose to be. I think you can get feeler gauge and check this can't ya?

I too have suffered from this type of problem, with several chevys over the years.Shimming it will probably just make it worse, unless the gear is too close to fully engage the ring gear.
The gap is tough to measure with the trans installed (or bellhousing), but if you can get in there, a paper clip should just fit between the teeth.

i think it might be a worn starter, or flywheel teeth, and the grinding sound might be starter teeth missing the flywheel teeth (ie. not catching them). i've replaced a starter and the flywheel teeth on an old volvo that did that for a friend of mine.
what you can try and do is tighten up the bolts holding the starter up, cuz them being a bit loose will also cause teh condition you described
just my .02 cents

Mannnnnn
That aint nothing
I just installed my new engine/tranny combo that i've been working on for months (as money permitted) and found out while I was putting on the final touches last night (starter) when I realized I was sold the wrong flexplate!!
I had to tear down to change it......
So be glad your starter problems aren't WORSE
