What is this thing?
It is the long black cylinder to the right of the wiper motor/washer pump assembly if you are looking from the front of the car. It has fittings for two vacumn lines coming out of the side, one on top of the other, but I only have the top line on it. I looked in my Haynes manual, but i could not find it in there.

post a picture, I think you are talking about the winshield washer fluid pump if it is one tube goes to the resivor and one goes to the washers
I know that it is not the charcoal canister. That is at the front of the car. It is possible that it is the washer pump, but isn't the washer pump and winshield wiper motor one unit?

Vacuum canister. It stores vacuum for the vacuum controlled stuff--like the A/C controls. Do your air conditioner controls work correctly? Top line to the A/C controls. Bottom line to a manifold vacuum source. I can't believe it took that many replies to get the answer, we must be slipping here at thirdgen.org.

Yup, it's a vacuum tank. That design seems to only be on the earlier model cars (82-85?).
I've never seen it on cars with cruise control, so my guess is that that the vacuum "ball" that comes with the cruise control system also takes over the function of that vacuum tank. Later cars seem to have the vacuum "ball" in the fender regardless of whether they have cruise control or not.
I added cruise to my car a while ago, so I had both. I'm actually removing the small vacuum canister while I'm rewiring a bunch of things.

i know i have that black canister on my fire wall and i have a 87 camaro with no cruse control. i dont have any vac lines attached to it and my air is stuck in defrost. i dont have a vac line going into the fire wall. were do i need to run a vac line from, the top or bottom of that black box on my fire wall, to some were inside the fire wall. i also think that i have a broken vac tub going to one of the vents. will i have to replace the whole vac peice on the back of my controls or can i just block off the broken tub to get it to partialy work. my last question is do i need to have the controls of were the air flow goes to have my ac to work. it will blow hot and normal out side air out the top defroster. thanks for any help.

You need to run a vacuum line from hard manifold vacuum to the larger fitting on the canister. Find the line that goes through the fire wall. It's there, unless somebody has been seriously hacking your car. It comes through along with the HVAC wiring, which is behind the pass side head below the heater hoses. Once you've found it, run another hose from the smaller fitting on the canister to the one you just found. You vents may work a little better.
I can't say about your A/C, it's not vacuum controlled. It may be low on Freon, or its wire disconnected, or it may be broken.
My 83 has that thing, and it has cruise also. I don't have the large ball type.

my ac is empty, i need to get it refill or i need to retrofit it. i know that i need to run a hose from the black canister to behind my fire wall and hook it up to the back of the temp controls. im just lost on what hose goes to the black box on the fire wall. or does the box creat its own vacume. and also if one of my vac lines inside that goes to one of the diaphrams that opens the different airducts is broke can i just cap it off and work with what i got left.

That explains what those wires coming from the other box is on the side of mine with that flashing light !! ..J/K ..i dont even have one . Well, I hooked up the only "loose" vacumn line that I could find (it was from the carb), but there was no noticible difference in idle, and the climate controls are still stuck on defrost. So, does anybody know EXACTLY which vacumn line hooks up to the bottom connector?

do you have a vacuum line going from your carb to your distributor? If not then the loose hose you found may be for your vacuum advance which is in the dist.
my heater controls dont work either but i have two vac lines coming from the firewall, which goes where?

Re: What is this thing?
WHOOHOO. I get to be the first exception :P . I had it on my 82 camaro, and I also have cruise control. Unfortunately the cruise control doesn't work, and instead of fixing it I am going to pull it out and free up some space in the engine bay. I've done a lot of re-routing vacume lines and such. The canister was not functioning anymore, so my a/c wasn't blowing any air through the vents. So, I tossed it and routed my vacume lines so that the a/c worked.
Damn I miss that car.
