Put the balancer in the oven at around 200 degrees (no higher) for an hour or so and put it on hot (wear gloves), you may have to tap it on, BUT if you have to hit it hard to get it to seat, DON'T, go get a harmonic balancer installer. Most of the better auto parts stores carry them.

Moroso, Tavia, and others make a tool to install the damper correctly. You may even be able to rent one at your local parts house. Do not try to hammer it on or try to pull it up with the damper bolt.

Dos Ponchos,

That "harmonic balancer installer" consists of a 7/16-20 threaded rod, 5" long or longer, a 7/16-20 nut, a washer, and a large drift (socket or the thick washer from your balancer bolt) to spread the load. If you can't find a dedicated "installer", you can assemble one from those parts, which should be available from any good hardware store.

Don't hammer it on, please. And don't try to use the original bolt to install the hub. I'm not ready for another one of those "Oh, Crap! I stripped my crankshaft!" type threads on the Tech board.

Before installing the balancer, rub some clean petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the outer hub that will contact the seal so that the new seal doesn't get damaged on installation or from running dry on start up.

You do know that you will have to lower the front of the oil pan to install the timing cover lower seal, right? And generous amounts of sensor-safe RTV sealant on the ends of the timing cover lower seal will complete the seal nicely.

No. The balancer is a 2 piece arrangement, the outer ring is attatched to the inner by an elastomer ring that you'll rip apart if you use a pulley/gear puller to remove it.
Go get a balancer puller. Discount auto carries them for about $15.

That's fine. Speed shops don't have the best prices for sure, and not even always the best quality. You'll generally find the top quality items, with material certs and manufacturing tracability at industrial or aviation suppliers, like Fastenal or their clones. Ask ARP about their material certs and process tracability and SPC charting. See if you can get them. Yeah, I thought so. That doesn't mean they aren't good - just not AS good. But they're not ashamed to price them higher. Go figure.

Just make sure those Home Depot bolts are graded '6' or better. And be very careful of imported fasteners, regardless of how they are grade marked. That's what the Fastener Quality Act of 1993 is all about - cheap imports (and even domestics) intentionally mis-marking critical fasteners for more profit.

Could you tell? I used to be in the business.

I'm going to be taking my timing chain cover apart because I just redid the gaskets but my stupid ex boyfriend's dad decided to cut the sides of the lip for the oil pan gasket. Anyone here ever cut that part?? I'm pretty sure your not suppose to either. Because I've got a pretty bad oil leak now. I'm glad i read the info about that balancer...I was always told to just beat it on with a hammer...but then again that info was supplied from the same person who cut my cover...did I mention that I wasn't there when he did it...and that he still wasn't able to get it on after he did it but I got it on just in seconds...sigh

Anyways...any other tips on taking apart the cover??

A good amount of ultra black RTV at the place where the paper gasket meets the rubber front seal.

I remember how paranoid my brother was when we did my cam install, he said he stripped one before.
