engine temp sensor related, few questions

The reason of theses questions is that I'm trying to figure out why my temp gauge is not working after my engine swap.

Is the engine temp sensor always located on the side of the head?

I have one sensor/switch on my intake where a connector with a green wire is attached to it. When I ground the wire, my electric fan starts but my guage doesnt move at all. So I figure that its only a switch for the fan, thats it?

Is there an aftermaket sensor that I could buy for a reasonnable price?

Thanks
