I'm looking to get a new stock oil pan. Do you guys recommend chrome ones? I might of heard they leak more then normal steel pans. Let me know of any experience you've had.
Matt
If anyone has a pan for a pre 79 2 piece rear let me know and we'll just scrap that whole chrome pan idea. Thanks!

I personally am not a fan of chrome but that's not the issue here. the main reason they tend to leak is that most of them are cheap quality and thin metal which causes them to warp and leak. if you can find a good thick one or get a stocker chromed, I don't see a problem with sealing.

The reason that the chrome ones leak is because the sealing surface is smoother than a standard pan. All you have to do is take some sand paper and rough up the surface where the gasket goes and it should seal like a normal pan. I did this on my timing cover and have never had a leak.

They look good, but serve no purpose other then that.
There very much like the trany pans, I mean who the *ell going to see it anywho.
The way the hold in heat is terrible, and that goes for any chrome part. They look nice, but have more cons than pros.

I got one cause it looks better then my stock one PLUS I bent mine by accident and checker auto had one ready in stock. For 40 bucks.. it's not a bad deal. If you take a grinding wheel, put it on a drill then go around all the sealing surfaces on the new pan you'll be just fine.

I used a stock replacement pan. Worked well enough for me. A friend had a chrome pan on the engine in the Camaro before I bought it, it leaked like a sieve.
Also, you can't see it. Chrome looks tacky to me if overdone. And I feel that a chrome pan is over doing it

Really...chrome UNDER the car??
Show car? Maybe....
Got it free? Sure....
Wait til it rusts from a rock chip.

I've got a chromed Moroso pan, and I think it is thinner and weaker than the original. I didn't get it for show, since chrome only makes ricers go faster. I got it because it was the cheapest nine-quart pan I could find, and I'm one cheap SOB. Now maybe I know why it was the cheapest. I haven't had any leakage problem, though.

I have a Trans-Dapt Chrome Slam-Guard Pan.
Didn't buy it because of the chrome though. It has a thick steel skid plate welded to the sump.Great for lowered cars.
They make trans pans with plates also.
Bought mine from Summit for $116.
Part# 8914 for 86-up small chevy
Part# 8912 for 80-85 small chevy
Part# 8910 for pre-1980 small chevy

I don't care for any chrome on modern engines, it looks good on street rods where you can actually see the engine and the car already has lots of other chrome parts on it. Chrome also causes something called hydrogen embrittlement that weakens the base material, and can cause cracking, especially on thin parts, that's why it's not used much on suspension parts.
