R-134a retrofit

I bought the kit that's made by Interdynamics for $34.99. It comes with all the doohickies to convert to a R-134a setup. I'm going to crack it open and read the manuals and see what’s in store for me. It comes with three 15 oz cans(36 oz of refrigerant and 9 oz of lubricant) of "134a and Oil Charge with Leak Sealer," a tube to connect to the cans, and some little valve dealies.

I don't know how many of the cans I'm suppost to use. They had some other kits that came with guages, but they were for cars already running R-134a. I found this interesting information in the FAQ at Interdynamics website:

Doesn't R-134a need higher pressure to work? Won't that damage my R-12 system?

R-134a systems are designed to run at higher pressure than an R-12 system, which is why we use less R-134a than the amount of R-12 in the system (80-85%). This keeps the pressure at the appropriate level.
The box repeatedly mentions that you have to take the car to get the old R-12 stuff by a "certified mechanic."

You'll need to flush the system with a special solvent to get out all the old oil. 134A uses a different type of oil and 2 oil types don't get along.

Lots of good info abt 134A conversions.

You'll also need high and low side gauges and a vacuum pump to service your system.

People using those kits without flushing are the ones who keep the professional A/C guys busy.
