what is correct timing

Hi, Can anyone tell me what the correct timing is for a stock 87 GTA with a 350 TPI.
I had a problem where the timing was constantly changing. I managed to find a dist cap for a 305 which looked the same and that solved the problem. But I have to set the timing to about 18-20 degrees BTDC for the car to perform good. Setting it any less causes over heating and hesitation. Is this setting OK.
Thanks
Prem.

Unplug the connector and try again. I know that the caps/rotors on '85-'87 TPI engines are different (lower and larger) than those on other V-8s.
