IAC vale properties?

hey guys i been having some troubles with my car, so i took the throttle body off, and the little water way thingy the iac screws in, anyway should the iac block off the holes or not? mine has like a 1/4 inch gap between the chineese hat looking thingy and the whole its pointing at. it looks like it was desingned to block that whole off, but mines not... maybee it does when the cars running?

i hope this wasnt to confusing

Sounds a bit confusing, but you just want to know if the IAC should be completely extended, right? I'm not sure.. and I don't have my car here, but I know that it has to be open a bit when you shut the car off. It should probably be at least partially blocking the hole, otherwise it wouldn't be of much use in controlling the idle speed as it would just be a large vacuum leak.

The IAC pintle (Chinese hat-looking thingy) should be fully retracted against the spring before it is installed into the TB. If the pintle isn't retracted, the IAC gears can suffer damage when the unit is screwed into the TB opening. The ECM will adjust the position as necessary from that point on.
