ticking sound on start up...
just started,is it a lifter not pumping up???it goes away when engine warm???
Can you isolate the sound to a particular side or part of the engine?
A leaky lifter can do that, but should dissapear shortly after the engine is started and lightly revved to increase oil flow and pressure. What is the start up oil pressure?
Injectors can make a light ticking sound, but those can easily be isolated by the stethoscope/screwdriver method, or unplugging injectors one at a time. They also don't always change in sound with temperature.

maybe a better description..
Thanx for input, when i start the car i really don't hear it ,until it goes into gear and pull out of driveway, the flowmaster tone may camoflage it,when i put a load on it,you can hear it very pronounced, oil pressure reads @40,the ticking/tapping sound doesn't go away until the temp gauge tells me it's up to @160 mark,if you stop, wait say 5 minutes, and start back up it's there when you put in gear and move??now the valve seals are probably in bad shape(smokes at start-up)and while following wife driving it,when she changed gears i can see a small puff smoke??best i can tell it's original with 83K miles, maybe getting time for top end,but right now no $$$
