Water pump dilemma
Water pump dilemma
argh argh argh.
My water pump is dying (bleeding out the weep hole) . this is perfect timing cause I'm got a driver training course at the local road track on the weekend. oh well it had 102k on it.
I want a stewart pump but can't find a place around here that sells one. One place the guy told me their plant burned down so no pumps.
right? Anyone know if I can get a stewart around BC Lower Mainland area?
All they have is edelbrock for $250 CDN. should I go edelbrock or order a stewart and use a junkyard pump for the weekend. Would a junkyard pump survive 6 hours on a road track? is the stewart that much better that I should wait? I don't have much $$$ to waste. I need to get this done ASAP cause car's got other stuff to work on.

DON'T get an Edelbrock. They're notorious for bearing failures after a very short life.
Stewart makes a good pump, but if you can't find one just a parts store cheapie replacment will still work just fine. I wouldn't risk a junkyard pump going and ruining my weekend if it were me, but you might get away with it.

What about trying to get a reman? Specify the one you want for a later '80s 3/4T truck w/AC and heavy duty cooling, and you SHOULD get the larger impeller. Take off the back cover at AutoZone's (or whoever's) parts counter to make sure the impeller has very deep vanes that almost touch the rear cover (take a 3/8" box wrench or ratchet/socket with you. I've done that at parts counters before and they don't seem to mind. They shouldn't if they want to sell a pump to you. It will probably move more coolant that even the Stewart, but might cost you an extra horsepower or two at peak RPM.
