timing advance question

correct me if I am wrong, but does the tech article about the HEI distrubuter on this site say that you can get around 50 deg. advance? Did I read it wrong or is it saying that that is at the crank? If it says that, please explain to me how it is possibly safe. I have always been under the assumption that with a gm you only want about 38deg. max. Otherwise you will really damage your engine because when your engine is firing, your crank has not advanced far enough to safely fire on the cylinder.
