Ignition problems?

Guys,
I sure could use some help. I finished up my 355 rebuild and am still using the cc carb and distributor. The car runs out of steam at 4500rpm. I just put a .149 needle and seat in the carb and have a minimum of 2psi at WOT(usually 3-4). I have an Accel supercoil and MSD 6AL for ignition.

Is there a wire to unhook when checking my timing on a '84 Z28 HO? My manual makes no mention of it. I set the initial timing at 12 deg and at 2500rpm had 12 degrees of advance.

I have a comp 270 magnum cam with 224/224 duration and .501 lift int/exh with my 1.6 rollers at .050. Cam has 4 deg adv built in. I also am running 10.2 cr and AFR 190 aluminum heads.

This engine should be a 6500rpm screamer.

Thanks for the help,
Craig

What exhaust & intake manifold do you have?

There is a flat 4-wire connector that comes from the base of the distributor to the firewall that needs to be disconnected when you set the "base" timing. Stock, the base timing was probably 6 degrees. With that kind of compression, that's probably where you should start.

When you said you set it at 12 degrees, and at 2500 had 12 degrees advance, did you mean 12 "additional" degrees, for a total of 24? That sounds about right for a disconnected 4-wire connector.

Are you getting any SES lights/codes?

With a stock coil and module, you aren't likely to get to 6500 RPMs.

Guys,
Thanks for replies so far. I have a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and Dynomax ceramic coated headers 1 5/8.

I evidently didn't set the base timing because I didn't disconnect the 4-wire connector. Thanks.

No SES light/codes.

five7kid,

Thanks for your help. I disconnected the 4-plug wire and set it at 14 deg base with 25 deg advance for a total of 41deg. I heard some knocking came home and backed it off a couple and my carb started acting up.

When I put in the new needle and seat the other day there is a lean screw. I didn't count to see how many turns it was down before I took it off so gas is leaking out the large vent tube at front-top of carb. I'll drop it off at a reputable shop next to work tomorrow at lunch and hopefully pick it up after work.

Before it started leaking the car sure was running good.

What can I do about the tachometer jumping at 5000rpm. It never did that before.

Thanks,
Craig
