Strange oil pressure problem, drops at high RPM's, Please help!!!
Ok, here's the problem, oil pressure seems to be dropping when I accelerate and when I am crusing. When I brake and come to an idle it recovers a bit. This is usually the oppiset problem that I have. Usually when I'm a little low, when I brake the pressure drops because all the oil goes to the front of the pan. Well, I replaced the pressure sender, oil filter, did an oil change and finally checked the distributer to make sure that it was enganged with the pump. At first it seemed that it was the distributer because after taking it out and priming the pump with a drill the pressure came up. I put everything back together and started the car and the pressure was normal. As soon as I took it for a drive the same thing started happening. There is about 1/4- 3/8 play in the distributer between the housing and the shaft itself. The only thing I could think of was that when I accelerate the force drives the distributer up disengaging it from the pump. Is that possible?
I would really like to avoid dropping the pan but I think thats where I'm at. Please help!! I need to get this car running, it's my daily driver. TIA.

I'm talking like 2600-3500 vs. idle around 1000. Pump is a high pressure/ high volume dynagear pump. Haven't checked to see if it's getting to the top, I'll do that. I hooked up a brand new mechanical gauge with 1/4 piping in the senders spot to make sure it wasn't the gauge. Thanks ede.

i guess that the pump coming disengaged from the dist is possible(although it seems like a real longshot) Does the bottom of the metal lip on the dist. shaft look like its been grinding against something? If it does then maybe its becoming disengaged. High flow pumps take more torque to drive them than the factory ones
It doesn't seem like the distributer is grinding on anything. Someone else I talked to said it could be a worn main bearing. But I'm not really hearing any noise and the engine is < 2 years old. I guess I'm dropping the pan
. Please keep the suggestions coming though. Thanks again.

Ok heres the update, I pulled the oil pan enough to check under the pickup and it appears that there was either a 1x3" piece of either silicon or paper towel covering nearly the entire pickup. If it was silicon it could be from the RTV red that I put around the seal to help stop the leaks, if it's a paper towel piece I have no idea how it got in there
. I'm fairly sure this was the promblem. Thanks for all your help guys.

Did that solve your problem? My car starts with about 55-60 pounds of pressure and decreasees as it warms up . At idle it has about 10 lbs. As soon as you start to accelerate it rises up with rpm. If you are hammering on it it will rise about 10 PSI per 1000 RPM up to about 3500 (and 35 psi) and then start dropping back off (almost down to 10 or 12 PSI) as the RPM's continue to increase. Pump, Sending unit, both , neither???
