Smog pump question (searched boards)
I did a search for this, but couldn't find anything to help me...
I've been reading about the smog pump removal on the 305...i'd like to do this, but I noticed some concerns were raised about removing it if you have a computer-controlled Q-jet. I have the CC Q-jet, but the belts on my '83 T/A currently are routed around the smog pump - it's just sitting there connected to the block. Do I need to be careful about affecting the Q-jet when I remove the pump & hoses? Thanks!

It's no so much the pump that is a concern as the diverter valve. On some years and models, the ECM will scan for the loads connected to it on power-up. If there is no resistance detected where the port and divert solenoids are supposed to be connected, the ECM may set a code.
I'm not sure on an '83, but I don't believe you would have a problem with this phenomenon.

The ECM in carbed cars doesn't know whether the air mgmt valve is there or not.
You need about a 7445 or 7450 belt if you remove the AIR pump, depending on which crank pulley you have. I believe the LG4 has the larger crank pulley (as opposed to the L69's factory underdrive crank pulley) and so will take the slightly longer belt.

Thanks for the response. Here's the deal: When I bought the car last August, it already had new belts on it that aren't connected to the smog pump. It's currently just sitting there taking up space. Can I just remove it along with the hoses, or is that going to create a problem for my carb? Thanks again.

I have an 85 TPI Z28 that I removed the pump from with no problems at all, just left the two plugs hang there in case I wish to reinstall all the stuff. No error codes ever came up. Mine just had a single belt going to the crank and nothing else on it, too.
