I just finished removing the smog pump and all the accompanying parts on an 89 350 Formula TPI car. The last remaining part is the tube on the passengers' side going down to the exhast pipe alongside the transmission fill-tube. It is bolted to the rear of the passenger side head, and I cannot get to the bolt. Any ideas on how to get in there and remove it?

I want to pull it all out without tearing any of it up. (I am gonna save them in case Al Gore get elected.)

tilt the motor back. drop your transmission crossmember(support the tranny) and lower it some. this should give you enough clearance to get it off.

 

I just had the heads off my car, and when I came to those bolts (there's one on each head in the back) I had a hard time with the pass. side. There was a retaining clip type thing on the bolt that kept the ground wires and tube bracket from coming off. Just thought you might need to know about it. I used a stubby 14mm wrench and went about an 1/8 turn at a time. It's a pain, but it gets the job done. If you're not planning on putting the smog stuff back on, just take a long screwdriver and pry the spot welds on tube/bracket apart. Sometimes a gorilla aproach is easier

 

I know its not hard to get to when the transmission is off, but maybe just lowering it will be enough. Otherwise, its going to be a pain.

 

Buy a ratcheting 9/16 closed wrench for like 9 bucks, it makes the job much easier.

 

For the one on the passenger side no wrench will help because of the tube brackets. What I did was to lay hands on a cheap 14mm socket and drill all the way through it in 3 places large enough to put a metal rod through for turning.

 

if i remember correctly I jacked the car up and went at it from the bottom up. I just kept turning it a little bit at a time.
