The next time you're in the area, drop in. We'll make a little trip and I'll show you the inner workings of a 7-cylinder radial. They're really a beautifully simple design. Their downfall is that they require a lot of space in a direction perpendicular to the crankshaft.
Other Radial "Oddities" -
There are no connecting rod bearings;
There is only one crankshaft throw;
There is no camshaft, only four lobes on the crankshaft;
Radials that aren't mounted flat (like those in a tank or amphibious vehicle) must be rotated slowly by hand before starting in order to work the oil accumulations out of the lower cylinders;
Almost all radials use a dry sump type lubrication system;
Contrary to common beliefs, not all radials are air cooled;
Most good radials use roller bearings;
Most radials I've seen use a single carburetor (the ONLY good Holley carb, IMHO - oddly very much like the Dominator but upside-down and a lot larger);
A Harley Davidson 'V' engine is very much like 2/5 or a radial engine;
Radials don't always have an odd number of cylinders;
There are diesel radial engines.
Just thought you might be interested...

I still like the R2800's in all the old warbirds (2800 is the displacement in cubic inches) but the quad bank 36 cylender 4 staged supercharger 4000Hp@ 3600rpm R5600 in the F2G Corsair (goodyear's version of the Chance-Vought F4U Corsair) was the most impresive radial I can think of.

i believe i have seen on the discovery wings channel, that back in the day of radial engines, some of them actually rotated the cylinders and kept the crank shaft stationary, then the prop was connected to the cylinders somehow.
can anybody verify this?

I've heard of the stationary crank radial engines, but never seen one.
R5600 huh?
Uhhh, I think it's YOUR turn to change the spark plugs. All 72 of them!!
Oh yeah, could you adj the valves while your at it?!?! Thx!!
hehehe
In A&P school, we had a DeHaviland Beaver with a R985. We got to tinker with it quite a bit.
It would smoke like crazy when first started, but it always fired right up, unless the instructor put a bug in it.
I remember it had an inertial starter. Inside it, there was a really heavy (~80 lbs) flywheel that could be spun up via hand crank if elec power wasn't avaliable. (Kinda sounded like an air raid siren) Once you got it spinning good, just engage the starter clutch and she'd cough,smoke, sputter a little, then smooth out.
It wasn't a high performance eng by any means, but it was still pretty cool!
