Failed Emissions

I just failed emissions for hydrocarbons(everything else was o.k) I have a Hypertech chip,160 degree stat,12 degrees of base timing). The car sits most of the time. Do any of these have anything to do with hydrocarbon failure. HELP!!

HC = unburned fuel or oil

An ignition miss will cause it. If HC is high but CO is OK, chances are the fuel mixture is OK.

Define "tuned up"... you probably have at least one cylinder that isn't running at least part of the time.

I just replaced the head gaskets so when i put it all back together i installed new plug wires, plugs, rotor, cap. I have a snap-on scan tool and I have no codes and everything is o.k.

Do a compression test, especially if you used shim head gaskets.

Some of your mod's can increase HC, so do the following. Reset your timing to 0 deg. Install a 180 or better yet a 195 thermostat.
Retarded timing & higher coolant temps reduce HC emissions. You'll get more bang for the buck by retarding timing.
