I think in a 305 it would be pretty lumpy. I have that cam in my girlfriends 350, and I had one in my firebirds previous 350, and it idles fairly smooth, with a little rump to it, in a 305 it would probably idle a little bit lumpier.

The XE268 is not good for a 305, way too much lift and duration. Take it back and get an XE256. That is as big as you want to go, even in a well built 305.

A lot better because of those 45 extra cubic inches. I don't know if you'll like it, though. An XE262 might give you a more enjoyable driver, but if you want a lumpy idle I suppose the 268 will provide more of that.

This motor -> http://www.angelfire.com/nb/thirdgen/343hp305.html
built by lunati, is a 305 with a larger cam than the XE268.
And has a lower lobe seperation degree.

Anyone else have experience with the idle with the XE268 cam in either a 305 or 350?

Take some good advice from myself and others and send that back. Yea, you will sound cool but you will wish you had it out of there in no time after some city driving. You did not list your mods, induction, gears or intended useage but the XE256 mentioned would be a good all around choice for a 305.

I noticed the lunati engine after i posted. The XE262 would not be a bad choice if you had some 3.42 or 3.73 gears.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I drive the car maybe 2 times a month. It will have ported and polished heads (vortec heads will be on later), just under 9.5:1 compression, 600 Double pumper Holley, through a T5 trans, and 9" with 3.9 gears.

Yeah my IROC is no longer a daily driver, so it won't be driven during the fall/spring semesters this year. It gets driven an avg of 5 miles a week right now I would say. The more lope to it the better, plus that gear drive will sound mean, it's a quiet one, but still.

F-Bird'88 has found that gear drives actually DECREASE your hp

His buddy's engine lost somewhere around 40 hp, if I remember correctly

Are you serious, maybe I should ask this on the board? 40hp is a crap load. I'll be putting the cam in early next week, but still need to order the locks/retainers for the springs. Doh.

I think that cam is a little big for stock heads, but since you have a carb, it may alright. That cam in a 305 makes me think GOOD flowing heads and a single plane.

Anyways in my 305 TPI (siamesed base) stock heads
i have the crane 2032 214/220 ~.5" lift w/ 1.6 RR

Idle sounds good, much better than stock, some loss of power below 1500 rpm, pulls hard and runs fastest shifting as high as i can right now at 5500 rev limited. I drive this car everyday, so it's still completely streetable, however my cam is a lot smaller than what you're talking about.

I'll laugh for days with that one:sillylol:

Mark: I was considering putting in a XE268 a while back, but decided Vortec's weren't worth it and chose the XE274 to match up to a set of AFR 195's. I guy at my job has an 84 Blazer with that XE268 cam, stock heads, Performer RPM intake and headers and it runs strong and sounds mean. Idles nice at 800rpm with just right amount of lope to warn other. No problems with power brakes or HVAC. And don't believe that 40HP loss from a gear drive either Something else wasn't right there.

These cams don't behave like the older grinds so don't say their too big until you have experience with them.
