Help lost lifter pontiac 400
Well my sons friend took his grand prix with the400 up to get dual exhaust put on it today after ignoring previous post. He was told to tighten rocker to 20 ft lbs. Since it was running he didn't tighten them he had to do a couple burn outs too. So anyways it started missing so he came cryin to me and i went up town where he left it and started torque n the nuts well one was completely sidways and the lifter has poped out !
Is it going to be in the valley or can it drop into the pan hes going to tear it down tonight but if it has a chance of going into the pan I'll tow him to his house not mine.

Hey, got your PM, don't know what time you sent it, but I just got back from class and it is now 10PM Pacific.
Anyway, more than likely, if the lifter actually popped out of it's bore, then it is laying on top of the lifter valley, I don't recall the drain holes being large enough for it to drop through. If it did though, it probably got mashed up while passing the crankshaft on its way to the pan. Did you put the windage tray on? If you did, then there might be even more damage done.
Did you use NEW half-round, dimpled jam nut on the rockers? (stock type) They are only good used once! The dimples kind of dig into the bottom of the rocker arm and hold it there once it has been torqued to the 20 ft/lbs mentioned earlier. Best to replace them all with good poly-lock type of retainer nuts. Those are adjusted the same way as any other engine (on the BASE CIRCLE, tighten the rocker nut until the pushrod doesn't spin anymore, then give 1/2 turn more)
I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune with the engine, my fingers are crossed that no major damage happened!
Good luck and let me know if I can be of any (more) help!
