Killed A *****.....got Me Thinking
Ok guys heres the story followed by the question.
I was coming home from work today when I pulled up to a light and a silver rx7(like the pos in fast and the furious) pulled up next to me. I pay it no mind cause im tired as hell and just want to get home. The guy in the mazda starts to rev the ***** up to get my attention. So I turn down my stero(windows were down, stereo full blast, almost didnt hear the rice burner) and look at him.
"nice car.......looks good too bad its slow...."
i say "you dont know what i got....and i dont know what you got....but theres one way to find out."
the light goes green and we take off........i waste him off the line.....way better reaction time and all.....then i hold him no problem and begin to play with him(lettin off and then gunning it)
all of a sudden i hear from his car a little pop....followed by a whoosh......then he flys past me laughing....
well the joke was on him......all of a sudden white smoke starts pouring out of his hood and blue smoke out of his grapefruit shooter exhaust
he pulls over disabled as i pass him to go have a beer.......
my question now is........what can i do to my car(stats in sig) to get more power out of the 2500 to 5000 rpm range....i have tons of low end torque and speed......just laggin at the upper end....
thanks for and advice and sorry for the long post but i had to share that with you guys......you are all like a weird car obsessed second family(which im proud to be a part of)
thanks again

yeah good point.....its only got 20000 miles on the rebuild....i got the motor from my friends van for free (it had 356000 miles on it and was smoking a lil) so i rebuilt it......bored .030 over.....and all that in the sig......im looking for a good carb/intake combo.....and if i should use the dual snorkel or not....i have a crapped out q jet(had no money left for a good carb at the time...hard lesson learned) and the stock intake manifold.......
just want to know what gives upper rpm range power...as to the fact that im pretty happy with the low end
i love 350's but will never knock the 305....and neither will the 350 owners that ive beaten with that 305

I would have drove back and helped him and said " Looks like I have good looks and speed !

weeeeel I own a feisty 305 running nice 15's and I can tell you from experience it takes more than just a more radical cam to wake these things up. for more "top end" your looking in the mechanical area, heads, cam, intake, springs... scary stuff since you just rebuilt it all. its a little late to squeeze "top end" out of your 305 unless you want to un-do and re-do all your hard work, and you prolly dont. ill just say little things like exhaust and cowl hood can make a big difference up top, beleive it or not, adding a cowl hood to my open element 305 gave me an extra .4 in the 1/4! I cant beleive it either.

2.5" cowl hood only, temporarilly put it on from my other car because I wanted to see what it would do. but, Ive gota put it back on my other car because otherwise I would have to cut a hole for the blower in the stock hood, and I dun wana do that.
Supercharger? I thought about it, but then I saw the cam profile of a stock 305 TBI... its LCA is 108 according to Thirdgen.org's resources, and 108 is not very boost friendly. it woulda prolly added 80-100 horsepower with 7-8 PSI of boost with my blower, but then I woulda had to go carb and there goes my 20 MPG... oh well... I got my 18 MPG 550 horsepower pile of crap running, Its funny how adding a supercharger can gain you gas mileage... lol it did for me!

well im not the biggest fan of the cowl look...but ill check out the hoods to see where i can get one decently cheap...thanks guys
King Talon said it. If you want more top end power, you need more flow. You can undo are replace a lot of your work, or start looking for a turbocharger to deliver more charge through your existing plumbing. At that point, however, you'll still need to do somthing to relieve the exhaust flow. You might want to start with the exhaust and see what that does for you first. From that point forward, you'll at least have good exhaust flow available to compliment any other modifications you make.

thats a decent exhaust for a 350 / 383 in N/A format, overkill for a 305, but if your going to try forces induction you better get some true dual exhaust, you cant force air in if you cant get it out first....

i though that you couldnt do true dual without some floor pan mods.......or is there a relatively inexpensive way
?

well im experimenting with that too... What I did so far was take the Y-pipe and cut it in half so that where it comes together, no longer comes together... thus I solve my twisty bendy around the oil pan / along the side of the car issues... Now im getting some OVAL tube and running it one pipe on top of the other, a total of 4" round exhaust in 2 oval pipes... and running 2 X 4 mufflers with X pipe in the middle... complicated? wait theres more.. at the front in the middle of the Y-pipe there will be a Un-cappable plate that will allow me to have open headers at the track... and super quiet street exhaust the rest of the time... the huge pipe and lots of it will give me the flow I need to scavenge on the street.... *** I wish I had a digital camera!

I would look for a dual plane intake. Try weiland (sp) stealth. That looks like it could be a good one. If you go single plane you might have a problem with hood room. I would look for a holley/elderbrock 600CFM. Did you port and polish your heads? Not sure if this helps. Duals are possible with our cars, just very hard. You would end up running both pipes down the same side. I think NJ Speeder has done it. A 3" pipe from y back to tail should have no problem for getting out the gas. Even if it is a single.

just remember.....it doesnt matter if you can beat everyone...it doesnt matter if your car runs a 15 second 1/4 or a 8 second 1/4 when you pull up to the line...all that matters is who wins and who blows their motor......now i dont see anything in my post that claims i am faster than anything out there......i also admitted that he passed me b4 he blew the motor.....
based on this.....get your head out of your *** so you can see the screen......and use both eyes to read........
thank you
shawn
p.s. weclome to thirdgen. id suggest hangning out a bit and seeing how things work around here b4 going off at the mouth...unless your using an alias id to flame people which would just be weak to begin with..........btw...what do you drive......
and just to say it again since you obviously dont read too well........I NEVER CLAIMED TO BE FASTER THAN EVERYONE OUT THERE>.......i simply told a story about a smart *** *****...who got his own.......
btw thanks camarochic....ill check those out on ferry street...

If I were you and wanting to add some power to your car, I would go with some better heads , a more aggressive cam (accompanying valvetrain stuff), maybe better gears? And do some fuel work to support your power. Of course like said before supercharging, turbocharging and the little blue bottle will help alot too.

Bah, what's all this hooey about young kids??!!! I've got my old man beat in the ticket war 3 to zip the last 4 years(he gets tickes not me). BTW the top Nascar drivers right now, Harvick, Earnhardt, Busch, Johnson, Kenseth... HHHMMM Rusty's fallin' off his game. See him last weekend? Not so good... I know Sterling has the points and Martin's right behind him (both of those guys are old as dirt), but we'll see how the season finishes out.
BTW I'm 22 going on 17.

So far everytime ive almost been hit has been because of a mistake by a elderly person. Its unbelivable how they drive!!!
Its scarey, they **** me off huge. Yah teen drivers are stupid also, we arent all perfect but the elderly drivers are just terrible.
They scare me on the road.

I think even when I am 90, I still won't do the speed limit. Lol It's not all old people, I know my dad hauls ***. But, you have to think of how you are driving and think, Is it them going to slow or me acting like a dam fool. I am only 23, by no means old, just my 3 kids and second marriage make me feel old. I look back at when I was a teenager and just wonder how I am alive. As you get older, you get smarter and become a better driver. Not saying anyone is a bad driver, just saying when you get my age ,even if I am only 23 you will look back and see you have gotten better since your teenage years. Don't think there is anyone on here that will say they were a better driver when they were a teenager than they are now. With age comes experience. That little old man was probably just scared sh*tless when he saw and heard you comin, so he slowed down to get the H*LL out of your way. Lol!!!!!!!!!!!

my question now is........what can i do to my car(stats in sig) to get more power out of the 2500 to 5000 rpm range....i have tons of low end torque and speed......just laggin at the upper end....
thanks for and advice and sorry for the long post but i had to share that with you guys......you are all like a weird car obsessed second family(which im proud to be a part of)
thanks again
Ok guys heres the story followed by the question.
I was coming home from work today when I pulled up to a light and a silver rx7(like the pos in fast and the furious) pulled up next to me. I pay it no mind cause im tired as hell and just want to get home. The guy in the mazda starts to rev the ***** up to get my attention. So I turn down my stero(windows were down, stereo full blast, almost didnt hear the rice burner) and look at him.
"nice car.......looks good too bad its slow...."
i say "you dont know what i got....and i dont know what you got....but theres one way to find out."
the light goes green and we take off........i waste him off the line.....way better reaction time and all.....then i hold him no problem and begin to play with him(lettin off and then gunning it)
all of a sudden i hear from his car a little pop....followed by a whoosh......then he flys past me laughing....

ok if it was the same type of rx7 that was on F&FF you shouldn´t have one. unless he had major problems which it sounded like he did.. and at that point he shouldn´t have been racing
second I wouldn´t call a car that runs 13.7 stock a *****. or one that with a option package handles just as good as the new Z06 vette and that was back in 93 this car was made
he might have been rice but I wouldn´t call the car rice
now if it was a second gen N/A I could see how you might win that one..... though I have seen quite a few of them that could beat a V8 even

He probably had an N/A 2 rotor car. Not very fast, but nice work.

if it was a thirdgen rx7 I wouldn´t be shocked if he had a 3" exhuast and so using a 3 1/2 or even a 4" tip would quite be rice now would it
but a second gen on the other hand with the dual exhuast has dual 2 inch pipes comming out the back and a lot of ppl switch to a single setup with either a 2 1/2 inch tail pipe to a 3" tail pipe
also there is not a lot avail for the RX7 without having a tip that is no more then 2 1/2 inch without staying stock
and sorry to say but the stock RX7 mufflers suck bad
