i need a good cam

hi,
i have a 84 z28 camaro, with factory 373 limited slip posi rear, and a t-5,im in the process of looking for a t-56,anyways,if i get a t-56 itll have 4-11's shortly afterwards, alright, now,i have my motor out of my car right now,the cam in it,well it just sucks, loses power at round 3-3500 rpm's,im thinking of maybe the 292h cam, from comp cams,in summit,it is 244,int/exh,@ 50,and 501 lift both int.and exh.,now, the only thing im worried about is the lift, will my springs handle that much lift?my motor was rebuilt about 30000 miles ago, andthere was a 3 angle vavle job done to them, thats bout all i know, said to be 1.6 ratio rockers also,
there is to be 10.1 pistons in it,and stage 2 rods,i didnt build it,so i really dont know, but thats what he said, now,im going to go with the performer rpm intake, and either edelbrock carb,or carter,750 cfm,and vaccum advanced distributor,(i need one if you have one for sale)well what do you guys think?im looking fora good strip car, however, want to be able to drive it more than a few times a year,so i dont need a huge cam that will suck all my gas,
so i guess my only question is,will my springs be alright,or will i need new ones, and also if you do/dont reccomend this cam, thanks alot.

The cam you mentioned is a pretty good cam ,a little large for a 305, I would drop the .050 duration down to the 220/230 range and the lift down to 480, with the 1.6s and 501 lift youre putting out around 530 lift, a little much for what you need, This way with 470 to 480 lift you can be around 500 lift with the 1.6 rockers adn have less required spring pressure, and it will allow you to use a stock diameter spring fine (but not stock pressure springs). With this cam you should be able to shift around 5500 to 6000 (induction and exh system allowing) and still have some decent lower torque below 3500 rpm. This would all change if you have a 350.

I'm 99% sure your spring can't handle that much lift.
But it doesn't matter, it's always the best to get matched springs. Your motor just won't perform right without them. Just ask the more experienced engine builders on here.

I just got the Comp 268XE, started the install today, but I gotta change the springs, pain in the butt part.

1.25" springs will not support a comp 292 for long

That cam is kind of old. Get a new version of a similar grind (with maybe a little less duration).

You can run a Z28 spring..but its really no tougher than a stock spring.

I was referring to the PSI that the springs have at given heights (open or closed) for instance I would recomend a spring for you that when the valve is closed that the spring would exert 120PSI and when the valve was open to push 350 PSI. This would give you good valve control to 6 thousand RPMs. No ,I really dont beleive the stock springs would handle the lift or the RPMs that this cam would give you. I would ask Comp Cams what springs they would reccomend for your set-up and use those. Mention to them what youre wanting to do and see also if you can get a stock diameter sprint so you can reuse your valvespring retainers you have now, that way all you would have to buy would be the springs and new locks. Also a spring height micrometer or a small steel ruler will help you make sure that you have the springs installed at the right height. Since youre using a 350 and its carbed the cam youre talking about will work , but it will not be a very freindly street cam, the only saving grace would be youre using a standard tranny.
