advice about new car?
Hey,
I bought a '85 Trans am a couple of months ago, and have some questions on how to improve it. It has a LG4 engine and a new 700R4 trans in it. When the new trans went in, they put on a 'vette servo too. Other than that, everything is stock...
First off, it really needs a tune up. NGK and AC Delco seem to be the recommended brands of plugs. What about plug wires and distributor parts?
I'm thinking of rebuilding the 350 out of my old '78 GMC pick up. What are some basic ways I can soup it up a bit? People have said that it might be too much for my tranny? Would I need a new carb as well?
How can I get rid of that ticking noise from the valve train? Is Jensen a good brand for audio equip? Crazy idea: If I get my AC going instead of tossing it, what would happen if I used it to cool the air going int the engine? Just wondering...
So many questions, so little time...
Thanks :hail:

1. welcome to the boards. you made a good decision as for a car to buy.
2. for you, just about any brand of plug wires would be suitable. i personally favor the MSD 8.5mm.
3. on that motor, cam, intake, heads, lots of porting. and no, that will not be too much power for you. we're not talking 400 horse's. just a lil more than stock.
4. what ticking noise? need more detail.
5. what's Jensen? ask that in the audio board. the only sound i need is that of open headers...
6. you will lose more power spinning that A/C compressor than you will make by cooling the air.
hope this helps a little!

Welcome.
Get full exhaust for the engine, as that is one of the weakest parts of it. Be sure to order stuff that will work well on a 350. That way you can transfer it without it being a bottleneck on a 350.
A ticking noise most likely is an exhaust leak, but it might be a lifter, so like said be more specific. Is it around your feet?

Thanks, your help is appreciated.
The ticking isn't from around my feet, but from the passenger side of the engine. It's been suggested that it is a lifter, or maybe something more serious.
Thanks again,
C.J.

too much heat and now a knocking
My new car: 305 tuneport 1986 red
camaro. When i bought the car i was told there was a rebult and modifide 700R4 tansmition in it. She ran hot real hot alot untill the transmitins went out. I just put a replacement in two day ago and now i also have a knocking on the passengers side. I thought that the manafold might need replaced and the price it really high. so i was told that header would be even better and then somone else say no headers because it is to hard to keep the wires and such from melting and that they are really a pan. so do any of you have some suggestions for me. my transmition is also running hot again. :( can you help?

Go with headers man. As long as you rought your wires good, you will not have any problem burning your wires. Anyone who would tell you to run stock over putting headers on your car IMO doesn't know much about cars, or performance.
