Adjusting IAC pintle length??

Someone suggested that this could be causing my idle problem. He said that when you change the IAC you have to measure the old pintle length and make the new one the same?? Is this true??
If so how do I adjust it, and should I make mine the same as the old one eventhough I went from a 305 to a 383??
Everytime I adjust my idle up with the IAC disconnected, it "magically" brings itself down the next day when I drive it. What's the deal??

do you own a manual? if not you ought to, it'll have pics and a description of how to do it in there. basically you wiggle it and press/pull. the iac length won't change just because the cubic inches did.

I do have a Chilton's manual that I'll check out, but if it doesn't I'm sure I can figure it out......I just wasn't sure if the pintle was threaded or anything.
Can someone explain why it needs to be adjusted. I thought the idea of the IAC was to move the pintle in and out to keep idle steady....wouldn't this mean it self adjusts??

OPen your throttle blades a little, with the screw if you have one.

Adjusting the pintle length is only necessary to assure that the pintle is not crushed/forced when the IAC is reassmbled to the throttle body. Once the IAC is insatalled, the ECM steps the IAC pintle in and out as necessary during normal operation. As long as the pintle is inserted at least to the specified depth for assembly, there should be no problems. I always just retract the pintle fully into the IAC motor for assembly and haven't had a problem yet.
