blow by

A mechanic told me my 305 motor has blow by. What is blow by and how do you correct it.

Blow by means cylinder compression is getting past the rings. You can usually see it by looking in the valve cover through a hole like the PCV. If excess pressure builds up in the crankcase then it can cause a lot of oil leaks plus the engine will be down on power.

The only way to fix blow by is with a rebuild. You need new piston rings. The cylinder walls could be out of round also requiring boring out the engine.

Looks like a good time to consider a 350.
